Dehydration in Players

The Problem:

Studies have shown that being dehydrated can have a profoundly negative impact on someone’s ability to make shots and gauge distance to the pin. Science has also shown that these negative effects often come “before” the individual knows there’s a problem  

But just drinking water isn’t enough. Most generic sports drinks either have too little electrolytes or have too much sugar, or both.  It’s not obvious how to solve this problem,  and constantly playing catch up with your hydration can take your focus off of what’s really important: making shots.  Considering that golf is played over 4 hours, usually on foot, across 18 holes – proper hydration is an opportunity to lower your scores.

 

Select ingredients in DF-18 that optimize Hydration:

Electrolyte-fluid balance: a critical component to sustain performance that helps direct (and keep) fluids in the body where they are needed.

Glycerol

Glycerol is a simple polyol compound found in nature which, when taken in a larger amount, will lower blood serum osmolality (That’s a fancy way to say it helps maintain fluid-levels in the blood and tissue!).  Some notable areas of improvement from this are:

  • Hyperhydration – by positively affecting osmolarity and the expansion and maintenance of fluid volume, glycerol helps the body maintain levels of hydration for extended periods of time → this will mitigate in equal measure the risk of dehydration-induced cognitive (and physical) decline.
  • Thermoregulation – when the body needs to cool itself, the hypothalamus signals the body to produce sweat.  Glycerol supplementation, as an extension of promoting blood osmolarity, helps the body reserve more water for maintaining core temperatures.  Ultimately, this helps reduce the thermal burden felt by players during their round. It makes your time in the sun that much more comfortable.
  • Improves physical endurance – studies have shown that glycerol supplementation reduces a subject’s mean heart rate by 2.8-4.4 beats/minute compared to placebo while also demonstrably improving time to exhaustion.  For a round, a lower heart rate and an improvement in stamina will result in greater composure and a greater capacity for “staying in the moment.”

Potassium + Sodium

Sodium is an essential mineral that regulates blood volume, blood pressure, osmotic equilibrium, and pH.(1)  Should sodium levels fall too greatly over the course of a Round, the effects can profoundly impact a golfer’s ability to stay in the moment.

Potassium helps to prevent muscle cramps and helps maintain fluid-balance inside our cells. In concert with Sodium, Potassium is important for a proper functioning nervous system and also helps regulate blood pressure.

By front-loading an adequate amount of Sodium and Potassium ahead of a Round, the player can 1) mitigate the effects of lost sodium through sweat, and 2) help ensure against unsuitable potassium to sodium ratio.

Taurine

Among the many benefits, a very interesting one is Taurine’s ability to help our bodies manage fluid-electrolyte balance in our cells.  Since hydration is more than just the presence of fluids in the body, but actually the distribution of fluids throughout the body – including Taurine for its osmoeffector abilities was a no-brainer.
